About the Role

YourStaffGroup, part of Social Work Partners (SWP), is seeking compassionate and dedicated 1:1 Learning Mentors to support children and young people who require additional guidance to re-engage with education.

This role involves working individually with learners who may have Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), anxiety, behavioural challenges, medical needs, or who are at risk of exclusion or not currently accessing mainstream education.

As a Learning Mentor, your focus will be on building positive relationships, improving confidence, promoting emotional wellbeing, and supporting young people to overcome barriers to learning. You will work closely with schools, Local Authorities, families, and other professionals to help each learner achieve their goals.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver high-quality one-to-one mentoring sessions in the home, school, community, or other agreed settings.
• Build trusting, supportive relationships with children and young people.
• Encourage engagement with education and learning.
• Support learners to develop confidence, resilience, motivation, and independence.
• Promote positive behaviour and emotional regulation strategies.
• Help learners develop social, communication, and life skills.
• Work towards individual targets and outcomes identified by schools or Local Authorities.
• Maintain accurate records of each session and complete progress reports.
• Liaise with parents, carers, schools, Local Authorities, and other professionals where appropriate.
• Follow safeguarding procedures and promote the welfare of all children and young people at all times.

Essential Requirements

• Experience working with children or young people in education, youth work, social care, mentoring, or a similar setting.
• Ability to build positive relationships with young people from a wide range of backgrounds.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Patient, empathetic, and resilient approach.
• Ability to manage challenging behaviour positively and professionally.
• Good organisational and record-keeping skills.
• Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one).
• Right to work in the UK.
• Ability to travel to learners within your local area.

Desirable Skills and Experience

• Experience supporting children with SEND, SEMH, ASD, ADHD, trauma, or anxiety.
• Knowledge of safeguarding and child protection procedures.
• Understanding of Alternative Provision and Local Authority education services.
• Experience working with pupils who are permanently excluded, at risk of exclusion, or experiencing Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA).
• Relevant qualifications in education, youth work, counselling, psychology, social care, or mentoring.
